This is dated circa January 1963, just after the Cuban Missile Crisis; when SAC’s jet bombardment wings were still at their peak (the last B-52H and B-58A had been delivered during October 1962) and the attrition of the force through draw-downs (retirement of early B-52 models) or in-flight losses had yet to begin.

SAC also had full deployment of special weapons at this time, with fourteen B-52 squadrons receiving the Quail and twenty-nine B-52 squadrons the Hound Dog (compatible with B-52E/F/G/H).

Finally, the dispersion of SAC’s force that had begun in 1958 was virtually complete at this point in time.

Originally, SAC intended to equip just fourteen Wings with the B-52; which would have resulted in the typical B-52 base having three squadrons of bombers (45 UE) and a single Air Refuelling Squadron (Heavy) with KC-135s (20 UE). The first six wings equipped with the B-52 (93 BW, 42 BW, 99 BW, 92 BW, 28 BW 6 BW) were organized under the three-squadron per wing (45 UE) principle, but the next three wings equipped (11 BW, 7 BW, 5 BW) received only two squadrons per wing (30 UE); and over time, these wings lost their extra squadron. All B-52 wings organized after that point had a single squadron (15 UE) of bombers backed up by one KC-135 equipped squadron (10 or 15 UE).

There were a few remaining quirks in the force structure – many of the former B-36 wings which converted to B-52s retained their larger wing organizations for a while; only gradually surrendering their extra squadrons over time.

For the statistics minded, the force structure below contains 36 Bomb / Strategic Aerospace Wings, 42 Bomb Squadrons and 31 Aerial Refuelling Squadrons (Heavy) stationed at 36 separate Air Force Bases across CONUS and Puerto Rico for a potential UE of 540 B-52s and 310 to 465 KC-135s.
