Using Google Advanced Search with Online Document Archives

(Updated 26 February 2013)

Google Advanced Search (LINK) is an awesome resource for the researcher, particularly now that more and more scanned documents are showing up online and being scanned/indexed by Google’s OCR engine.

Here’s how you use it:

In the SITE OR DOMAIN field, enter these possible links:

NTRS (NASA Technical Reports Server)
http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/

DTIC
http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/

Alternately, here’s a pre-laid out search string for Google:

"Titan 34" site:www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/ filetype:pdf

This will search DTIC for anything that is a PDF document that contains the string “Titan 34”.

Likewise, this string works for NTRS:

"Intermediate" site:http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/ filetype:pdf
