SUBJECT: Armament for Naval Aircraft; Bureau Policy regarding.

1. Based, on recommendations of Bureau personnel and Forces afloat, this Division recommends that the Bureau adopt as its policy the armaments as are herein listed for the different classes of new construction naval aircraft. No changes are recommended for planes in service.

VF-1

Guns:

1-.30 and 1-.50 cal. synchronized.


Bombs:

Provision for 2-116# bombs or approximately the same weight of time fused anti-aircraft fragmentation bombs when a satisfactory type has been developed.

VBF

Guns:

1-.30 cal. and 1-.50 cal. synchronized.


Bombs:

1-500#. Provision for 2-116# bombs as alternate bomb load.

VSB

Guns:

1-.50 cal., or 1-.50 cal.(alternate), synchronized, and 1-.30 cal, flex.

Note: The purpose for the alternate .30 cal, installation is for training use and to allow an increase in gasoline equal to the difference in weight between the .50 cal, and the .30 cal. gun installations.


Bombs:

1-500# or 2-116# bombs (alternate).

VB

Guns:

1-.50 cal. synchronized.
1-.30 cal, flex.


Bombs:

1-1000#, or 1-500# (alternate). Provision for 2-116# bombs as alternate bomb load.

VTB

Guns:

1-.30 cal. synchronized. 1-.30 cal. flex.


Bombs:

1-1000#, or 3-500# (alternate) . Provision for 12-116# bombs as alternate bombload.

Note: The requirement for 3-500# bombs is tentative, pending the tests of the installations, in the experimental planes now being constructed.


Torpedo:

1 Aircraft torpedo in lieu of bomb(s).

VOS

Guns:

1-.30 cal. synchronized.
1-.30 cal. flex.


Bombs:

2-116# (provision for).

VBO

Guns:

1-.30 cal. synchronized.
1-.30 .cal. flex.


Bombs:

2-116#.

VPB

Guns:

3-.30 cal. flex. (at least).

Note: In addition, provision will be made for mounting a .50 cal. flex, gun aft, provided the tests of the XP3Y-1 and the XP3D-1 warrant same.


Bombs :

2-1000# (at least), or

4-500# (at least) (alternate). Provision for 12-116# (at least; as alternate bomb load.


Torpedo:

Provision for two aircraft torpedoes, in lieu of bombs, pending tests of XP3Y-1 and XP3D-1.

VPTB

Guns:

Same as VPB.


Bombs:

At least 4-1000#, or at least 6-500# (alternate). Provision for at least 15-116# bombs as alternate bomb load.


Torpedo:

Two aircraft torpedoes, or one destroyer torpedo, in lieu of bombs.

Note: This installation listed is based on an. experimental class of plane and is subject to change, pending tests of the XPTBH-1.
